ONLY THE EMBOSSING REMAINS FROM RICE STRAW.
The tradition that RHODE has with Eastern martial arts dates back to the early 20th century when sports science here had barely any practical experience with Asian techniques. Training and fighting were then done on original Japanese rice straw mats, which were not adapted to the dry European climate. This resulted in wear and tear after only a short time. A brilliant idea from the founder in 1952 led to a completely new mat type: the RHODE TATAMI. Strong cotton felt pads were glued together like plywood, laminated with rubber-coconut, and covered with a strong cotton sailcloth. A step in a completely new direction. New materials and production processes today allow us to tailor to the specific needs of various martial arts. See for yourself.
